UTEP Miners tickets - A Bright Future Ahead!

Last season was one of the most disastrous seasons for the UTEP Miners. Some time not too far from today, they were ranked 117th in the league, in terms of their defensive play. UTEP Minors’ management did their bit by shuffling coaches around, but that could have them improve their rankings only by 2 places. 115th place – That’s all that UTEP Minors could muster at the end of last season!

Change is always welcome, but with the UTEP Miners, it can be said that change is something of a necessity here!

Obviously, the UTEP management realized something was amiss. Putting together a string of X and O on the board is okay, but it would sooner than later come to zero if the plans are not implemented properly. To the credit of UTEP, there was no shortage of plans. If anything, their plans were just as good as any other plan in the league. Alas! The plans could not be implemented on the field.

This triggered the UTEP management to think of wholesale changes in their defensive line. They felt the need of having bigger and stronger people in their defensive line to ensure minimal slip-up of points. This could thwart some of the defensive issues that UTEP has at the moment. In reality though, another set of problems dominate the plate of UTEP.

One of them is injuries to their key defenders. Roddray Walker, Royzell Smith and Brandis Dew, all of them seemed to have some niggle or the other. As on date, only Dew seems to be fit enough to take the field. Recruiting fresh players at this moment could pose some challenges. The first of them would be train them to gel well with the existing players.

Obviously, second in line would be on getting them acclimatized to the playing conditions. But the biggest challenge UTEP would need to overcome is the absence of Braxton Amy. Amy would have been the player who could fit easily into the scheme of things. This could have allowed the UTEP to employ a 3-3-5 hybrid defense with Amy in the middle. With Amy not in the picture, that seems unlikely to happen.

In terms of looking ahead, all their offensive line has done in the last season gives enough reasons for UTEP Miners to believe they have a potent future. On an average, 38 of the 44 UTEP touchdowns return to the base, which can only be good for the Miners. Add to this the fact that they have lost only one starter in the offensive line, and you would know that they have a strong offensive line.

It is the defense that UTEP Miners need some work. With the kind of recruits being spoken of to join the team, surely the management is working on this aspect hard.

Bleak present but a good future ahead – That is UTEP Miners for you!

UCF Golden Knights tickets - Enough Pressure to Turn Carbon into Diamond

This year, UCF Golden Knights had invested heavily in youth and inexperience. They lost a lot of games but this could in essence be one of the biggest assets for the upcoming year.

2008 was a disastrous season for the UCF Golden Knights as they ended up with a record of 4-8. The management of UCF attributes this to relatively young players entering their team. Pitted against top quality and experienced players this year, it really has been baptism by fire for most young players of the UCF.

10 players can really make the fortunes turn around for the UCF Golden Knights. It is these players playing in different positions that could make it work for the Knights.

•Rob Calabrese – If Coach George O’Leary has to be believed, and then Rob is one of the hardest working students of this game. He will play the quarterback position, a position, which demands high level of professionalism and aggression. In the last season, Calabrese went 65 on 165 and had seven touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Not bad figures for an initiation!

•Brynn Harvey – This young kid adds a lot of speed to the team. He is a running back, and in the last season, he demonstrated some glimpses of the speed and power.

•Rocky Ross – This season saw some of the worst catching by the Knights. With the inclusion of Rocky Ross, this problem could be solved. Rocky is mentally fit and has exceptional leadership qualities.

•Adam Nissley – He started as a tightman but moved on to be an effective right tackle! In the games he played, Adam showed enough to suggest that he could be the guy who can burden the offensive line of the Knights.

•Ian Bustillo – Ian is a junior center and in his starts last year, it seemed that he lacked focus. In this season, it remains to be seen if he can put the distractions aside.

•Torrell Troup – Torrell has been touted as the next big thing for the Knights in the defensive line. He can draw double teams and importantly, open up a lot of opportunities and spaces for the defense.

•Bruce Miller – Here is a guy that could be played almost anywhere on the field. Very versatile and high energy – that is Bruce Miller for you!

•Lawrence Young – Lawrence brings a lot of speed and power to the defense. He was tied second with 72 tackles last year. He is a sophomore linebacker.

•Emery Allen – This junior cornerback is touted as the mind of the Knights. In the 9 starts last season, he forced a couple of sacks and made some good decisions. He also ensured some balls were fumbled by the opposition.

Darin Baldwin – He is one of the more mercurial players in the Knights line-up. But, his value to the defensive line can just not be undermined.

Needless to say, all the strengths of these players will only come in handy next season. Yes, it did not work for the Knights last season, but better things are in store.

Tulsa Golden Hurricanes tickets - A Team against the Wall

If disappointment had to be summarized best, you could find it at Tulsa, Oklahoma. The setting – A championship match up against East Carolina!

Tulsa, obviously were overwhelming favorites. Man-man, they had a better team. And they also had the charismatic quarterback David Johnson, who could run any opponent ragged. On the other hand, the ECU was somewhat of an unknown quantity. It really seemed to boil down to who winked first?

So what was the turning point of the match? In an action-packed and an exciting match, expect to find many such exciting moments. One amongst them was Ben Hartman’s steal resulting in a 36-yard field goal. Not sure what the Tulsa defensive line was doing. But people who saw the goal say that Ben caught them napping!

In terms of consistency throughout the match, it must be said that the defensive line of the ECU broke the back of Tulsa attackers. With their gritty and hard working approach to defending, injured ECU players playing in the defensive line gave it all, as if they were playing for their life.

The final nail in the coffin for Tulsa came through 63 seconds before close of play. A David Johnson move was intercepted, for the umpteenth time in the afternoon, and the ECU scored. It seemed that the strategy of Tulsa Golden Hurricanes revolved almost David, and once the opposition found a way to shut him out of the game, they could not do anything about it.

When the final hooter came through, the score line read 27-24 in favor of the ECU. What followed next were wild celebrations! ECU was obviously delighted with their first clinch of the coveted trophy. Coach Skip Holtz received the traditional Gatorade shower. Amongst other scenes, the most poignant one was that of running back Norman Whitely hopping on to a table and leading the ECU band.

So what does the road ahead have in store for ECU? First things, in light of this victory, ECU gets an opportunity to play against Kentucky in Auto Zone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on January 2nd, 2009. Look back mid-season – The ECU were struggling with their form, and quite a few of their players had niggles and injuries. This was when Holtz took over. With him at the helm of affairs, there seemed to be a positive change in the air. Holtz spoke a lot on how they could win championships. Clearly, Holtz attitude seemed to have rubbed off on his players. And the proof is there for everyone to see?

Holtz for one seems to be pretty uncertain about his future with ECU. For some strange reasons, he feels that he could be fired by the management. ECU should also think of a way by improving their bench strength to ensure they give good rest to players so they could recover from injuries.
