In 1950, the Rice Stadium was built to serve as the training and playground of the Rice Owls football team. It was also in this stadium wherein the Americans bore witness to the inspiring speech of the late-President John F. Kennedy, who spilled the beans about the possibility of sending humans to the moon, and that they are the first to do that among the nations of the world. Years later, the speech became a reality.
The rise of the Rice Owls to national limelight was to be credited to the patient and skillful coaches of the team through the years Phillip Arbuckle (1912-17,'19-23), John Anderson (1918), John Heisman (1924-1927), Claude Rothgeb (1928), (1929-1933), (1934-1939), (1940-1966), Bo Hagan (1967-1970), Bill Peterson (1971), Al Conover (1972-1975), Homer Rice (1976-1977), Ray Alborn (1978-1983), Watson Brown (1984-1985), Jerry Berndt (1986-1988), Fred Goldsmith (1989-1993), Ken Hatfield (1994-2005), Todd Graham (2006), David Bailiff (2007-present). Without these stars, the team wouldn’t have been catapulted to the stars that they are right now.
In 2003, the Rice Owls defeated the football team of Stanford, which gained them the championship title of the 2003 College World Series. The Owls stole 2 games from Stanford, which only won one game. At that time, Rice University is known as the smallest university with sheer number of students compared to the schools. However, the win made the institution’s name big, because it was the first smallest university to win a national championship min 51 years.
At the 2004 MLB draft, the Rice University became the harvest field, with three of its players – Philip Humber, Jeff Nieman, and Wade Townsend – being in the top 8 picks of the league.
In 2004, Rice became the first school ever to have three players selected in the first eight picks of the MLB draft when Philip Humber, Jeff Niemann and Wade Townsend were selected third, fourth, and eighth, respectively. In 2007, Joe Savery was selected as the 19th overall pick.
Moreover, the football team continued its dominance in the sport by finishing an impressive third place in the 2006 and 2007 College World Series Tournaments. To date, the Rice Owls has a total of 12 consecutive championship wins tucked under its name – nine championships in the Western Athletic Conference, and three while being a member of Conference USA. This season, the Rice Owls vow to do their best to get their 13th championship title. With impressive stats that made them the 10th highest in Conference USA for the points scored per game with a remarkable 20.1 points per game. They are currently on a three-way tie on the top spot with the Houston Cougars and the Tulsa. The west division champs of Conference USA is yet to be determined but surely, the Owls are vying for the top spot and will stop at nothing to get there.

Memphis Tigers College Football Tickets Available

Memphis Tigers is an intercollegiate team participating in Conference USA representing the University of Memphis. The team’s home is a massive 62,380 seater stadium called the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Donning jerseys in school colors blue and white, the college football team prides itself with remarkable alumni which include DeAngelo Williams who now plays with the Carolina Panthers. The Memphis Tigers also boasts of having 2 mascots—one of which is a live tiger who unfortunately died recently, and a costume-clad mascot by the name of Pouncer. Tom II, the teams’ live tiger will be replaced by Tom III. Picking the right tiger wasn’t really easy, they had to pick one that encapsulates their vision of an appropriate representative of their university.
Since 2001, the Memphis Tigers’ head coach has been Tommy West. He has served Clemson University before he transferred to Memphis. His son, Turner, is currently playing as wide receiver for the Tigers.
Early on the conference, Clinton McDonald, Quarterback Arkelon Hall, and Curtis Steele proved to be forces to be reckoned with. These players are stopping at nothing to beat their opponents and win glory for their school. Even with a splint, Hall continues to be an asset for the team. The team is set to meet up with 2 more games this season. Charlie Jones and Earnest Williams are just as important in the team as they have provided the touchdowns significantly. Wide Receiver Carlos Singleton is yet another athlete to watch out for. Alton Starr also leads the record with a whopping 70 tackle record which includes 4 tackles for loss, 3 pass breakups, fumble recovery and an interception.
Clinton McDonald leads the Memphis Tigers with seven sacks but is unfortunately injured right now in his ankle. Currently tied with the Marshall Thundering Herd at 2nd place currently for the conference stats, the Memphis Tigers will stop at nothing to bag the East division before anything else. The Tigers average 27.3 points per game matched with 242.7 passing yards and 196.6 rushing yards per game. They have remarkably lost only four fumbles in ten games. The team ranks 3rd among in Conference USA if we’re going to count the points allowed with a stingy 25.3 points per game. Most impressively, they top the total defense among the Conference USA teams with a striking 331.6 yards per game and ranks 43rd among in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Over the past ten years fans have had their hearts broken when the Memphis Tigers have been the better team and yet lost the game on several occasions. The Memphis Tigers had a rough post season contention as they lost the first three games of the season and their top three quarterbacks but they are definitely going to give their 101% effort to make this year different for their fans. Their formula to win is simple—a powerful roster; an outstanding bounce from a humiliating loss streak; their passion, courage and will to win; and most importantly, the support of their fans.

Marshall Thundering Herd College Football Team

Representing the University of Huntington in West Virginia, the Marshall Thundering Herd is a collective intercollegiate athletic team that competes in Conference USA, NCAA Division I. The Thundering Herd’s home base is the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. They parade in the color combination of kelly green and white, with Marco the Buffalo as their mascot.
The Marshall Thundering Herd has won several conference titles, winning the first one way back in 1925. They have won the championships in 1928, 1931, 1937, 1988, 1994, 1996, 2002 and a grand slam win from 1998 to 2000. The 90’s was indeed a rich decade for the Thundering Herd. Not only have they won most of the conference titles, they have an impressive 115-25 win-lose stat in contrast to the 1970 program that they had. Many several factors contributed to the dismaying results of the team stats in that decade. It was in 1970 when a plane crashed and killed the entire Thundering Herd football team and was a complete tragedy for the families, friends, and fans of the victims. Aside from that, the university changed head coaches four times during that period. It proved to be a wrong move on their part since they capped off the decade with a dismal 23-83 finish for the decade.
Though the Marshall Thundering Herd suffered from a great loss from the recent bout with East Carolina Pirates, the team didn’t lose hopes in bouncing back from humiliation. It really hurt the confidence of the team especially that the game ended with overtime and a score of 19-16. Other teams should definitely watch out for players Darius Marshall, Mario Harvey and Darius Passmore in the next few games. Marshall is a sophomore that has recorded his second straight 100 yard game, making it his 5th for the whole season during their last game. Harvey is on his career high with an impressive 15 tackles in their game with East Carolina Pirates. Passmore, on the other hand, has also recorded his 4th reception of the season during the same game. So far the games of the team this season is quite exciting. Their losses are just a few margins away, just like their last game with the East Carolina Pirates and a 23-21 loss with University of Alabama and Birmingham Blazers as well. Their wins are even more exciting since the win jumps from one team to another.
Though they lost the game to their rivals, the team is definitely not out of the picture. Matter of fact, the Thundering Herd still ranks second currently in the East Division with 3-3 for the conference and 4-6 over all. They also rank 10th in total offense with an average of 325.6 yards per game and 7th in total defense with 404.5 yards per game. They also have currently pulled up a remarkable 25.9 points per game and have become the 4th highest in the conference currently and the 68th in NCAA. The Marshall Thundering Herd is without a doubt, a team that deserves respect and recognition.

Houston Cougars College Football Tickets Available

Representing the University of Houston, the Houston Cougars is an NCAA Division I college football that takes pride in years of excellence. Commonly referred to as “UH”, the Houston Cougars have established their name well in collegiate football and has played their first season in 1946. The team has won over 10 conference championships over the years and had players winning coveted awards including the Heisman Trophy award and the Davey O’Brien Quarterback Award which was both awarded to Andre Ware in 1989. Other of their pride trophies earned include the Sammy Bough Trophy won by David Klingler in 1990 and the Lombardi Award won by Wilson Whitley in 1976. Four of their championship wins started in the Missouri Valley Conference.
It was during the 1950’s when they flourished the stadiums and gained utmost respect from the conference. After their stint with the Missouri Valley Conference, they later joined the Southwest Conference and have won, yet again, another 4 more championship titles in 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1984. Finally, after joining Conference USA, the team have won in 1996 and won again a decade after. Though the team was originally created in 1946, talks of having a collegiate football team for the University of Houston dates 5 years earlier. As early as 1941, the Houston Cougars have been battling the Rice Owls. This rivalry lasted for decades and has become their constant opponent to reach the championships.
Shasta the Cougar, clad in the colors red and white, is the team’s official mascot while the Robertson Stadium, previously called Houston Public School Stadium, is the where many victorious bouts against rivals took place. Currently spearheaded by head coach Kevin Sumlin, the team is again packed with energy, passion and commitment to relive the rich history the team has. Sumlin has just been named the 11th head coach for the Houston Cougars just last year but surely is not a newbie in coaching football. Included in his resume, he has been a co-offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners. He has been famous for drawing a rather large crowd in his debut game as a coach which actually made history. Sumlin also has been the very first Afro-American head coach that the cougars had.
Since their last triumph in 2006, all that the Cougars can think of is filling that gap of not winning last year and commence to become over-all champs once again. Led with 20 seniors including Mark Hafner, Mighty Inyang and Cody Lubojasky, there is no stopping this enraged team to reach their hope being hailed champs again. Though freshman Patrick Edwards injured his leg in the game with the Marshall Thundering Herd previously, they are far from being disheartened by the incident. Rather, the team has renewed faith in themselves to still make it in the end. Currently in a three way tie together with Tulsa Green Wave and Rice Owls at 5-1 stats in the Conference USA count, there is without a doubt that the Houston Cougars would emerge victorious once again.

East Carolina Pirates College Football Tickets available
Wednesday, January 7, 2009
Founded in Greenville, North Carolina, The East Carolina Pirates is the team representing the intercollegiate professional football team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association for East Carolina. So far, the team has won over 8 bowl games and 5 conference championships. Popular for its Old Gold and Royal Purple combination, the team boasts is perseverance to constantly bag the championships. East Carolina Pirates has been in a total of three conferences so far which includes North State, Conference USA and Southern where they won three times and shared the championship once. Currently, the team has yet to win their first conference championship in Conference USA.
Originally, the team was named after pirates because the North Carolina coasts has been long associated with Blackbeard, one of the most popular pirates in the history, and his men. They have settled in the communities of Bath, Beaufort and Ocracoke. Pee Dee the Pirate, the University’s mascot, is actually based on Blackbeard’s character. Pee Dee is actually a river that cuts North Carolina and South Carolina. This river is where the pirates have usually set up their camp. In 1934, East Carolina decided to acquire the name Pirates to capture the historical background of their land.
This season, the East Carolina Pirates is yet again a hot item for football fanatics and college patriots alike. After their very good and capable season in 2007, they will surely sizzle again in 2008 and excite the watchers of the game. Current head coach Skip Holtz has worked hard to keep his team in good physical shape and high spirits. With their high-powered offense and undeniably good defense, the Pirates prove to be a competitive contender to reckon with. The Pirates are currently ranked 8th in Conference USA and 9th in total offense. Their defense, however is one of the stingiest red-zone defense and actually lead the conference’s total defense.
Their winning streak of three games has allowed just 12.0 points and 233.3 yards of offense per game. This brought about by team effort as contributors have been coming from all over the field. But what has shined recently is the impressive play of the linebackers. Rivals should also watch out for quarterback Patrick Pinkney who moved into sole possession of seventh place on the school’s all-time completions list after connecting on 26-of-37 attempts for 287 yards and a touchdown against Marshall. Freshman Emmanuel Davis has been defensive player of the week and is yet another player to look out for.
Surely, the Dowdy-Ficklin Stadium will be filled with raving fanatics and create a pandemonium to cheer for the East Carolina Pirates to break more school records and beat their rivals at their prime. If the East Carolina Pirates win over the Marshall University Thundering Horde on the next game, they will bag the East Division. Winning the east division will be a breeze for the Pirates but rivals will definitely give them something to work on. The next few games is something worthwhile to look forward to.

UAB Blazers College Football Tickets available
Alabama is more than sweet homes. This is the home of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers. They are an NCAA Division I Footbal Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A). They are competing members of the East Division of Conference USA. Their home games are played in the Legion Field, an off campus stadium with a capacity of 71,594.
The Blazers’ origins started in 1989, where UAB began with the play of an organized football club. After two years a football club team, then UAB President Charles McCallum and Atheltic director Gene Bartow announced then that the university will be competing as an NCAA Division III team in the fall of 1991, with Kim Hilver as the first head coach.
The 1993 season marked a big difference for the UAB Blazers. During this time, an NCAA ruling has resulted in reclassifying the UAB Blazers under a I-AA team after only a pair of seasons in the Division III level.
The 1995 season, however, marked the Blazers’ first all time victory over a Division I-A opponent on the road against a North Texas squad with a final score of 19-14. From 93-95, UAB competed as a Division I-AA independent squad. Before their jump to a Division I-A category team in the 1996 season, they complied a 21-12 overall record.
Watson Brown, the ultimate face of the coaching team of the Blazer for over a span of twelve years, resignes on December of 2006. The search for a new head coach came down to former Alabama player and Georgia offensive coordinator Neil Callaway.
Milestones and Achievements
Though lacking in tradition, the University of Alabama in Birmingham has not lacked the skill and the might needed to topple down traditions of football teams. Since their move from up to Division I-A, UAB has made it a point to play many of college football’s traditional powers. They kicked off the new millennium by achieving a momentous victory against LSU in Baton Rouge. Also in 2004, they earned their first bowl trip – the Hawaii bowl.
Current Quarterbacks in the Roster
Joe Webb, Joseph Bento, Randal Lewis.
UAB Blazers Recent News
The Blazers have just recently set the Louisiana Stadium after their scorching 41-24 victory over Conference USA foe Tulane just this Sunday afternoon. Quarterback Joe Webb has the hottest streak as he ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns to cement the win. Webb completed 15 of his 21 passes for 154 yards, has scored on runs of 31, three and one yard for the Blazers with a record of 3-7, 2-4 in Conference USA. The Blazers are heating up as well as senior cornerback Kevin Sanders had two interceptions on that day, too.
This is a very important win for the Blazers as this ultimately erased their memories of the loss against South Mississippi two weeks ago. Expect a huge crowd to gather in at Legion Field as the Blazers are set to play their final home game of the season next Saturday as they host East Carolina. Game time is set at 6:00pm and will be televised locally by TV Station CSS.

Texas Tech Red Raiders College Football Tickets available
Sunday, January 4, 2009

Texas Tech University is represented by the Texas Tech Raiders football team. They are part of the Big 12 conference, which is a Division 1 Bowl Subdivision (or formerly known as Division I-A) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The team began football in 1925 and has an overall winning record. The team is currently being coached by Mike Leach. Home games are played at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.
Texas Tech, or TTU as it is more commonly known, played its first intercollegiate football game on October 3rd of 1925. This was a controversial game as it resulted to a 0-0 tie against McMurry University when the referee ruled that the clock had run out before the score.
Texas Tech University’s first head coach is Ewing Freeland, which saw a 21-10-6 slate for his four years of tenure as coach. Before becoming known as the Raiders, they were known as the Matadors. After Freeland, Grady Higginbotham coached the team with much little success, at only .200 winning percentage. After a year of only one win, two ties and seven losses, the team was coached by Pete Cawthon who led the Raiders for the next eleven seasons. His winning percentage of 0.693 has never been surpassed at Texas Tech as of this date.
The Raiders have been an independent team for its first seven years. It was during the Cawthon era that they joined the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
There were two coaches after Cawthon who held on to the post for a decade. Dell Morgan started his coaching in 1941, with a 55-49-3 record that ended up in three bowl appearances. DeWitt Weaver started his run on 1951, with a 49-51-5 record. He coached the Raiders to their first bowl victory, in a game against Pacific in the 1951 Sun Bowl.
The Raiders withdrew from the BDIAA in 19956 and became independent for the next three years. The Raiders joined the Big 12 conference in 1996, wherein they were known as the only team in the Big 12 to have a winning season each year since the Big 12’s inception.
Milestones and Accomplishments
The Raiders enjoyed a lot of firsts during the time of Cawthon. In 1934, they were first referred to as the Red Raiders. They were also the first team to fly to a game on 1937. They also received the first postseason invite to the 1937 Sun Bowl.
During the 1938 season, Cawthon led the Raiders to become the only team in college football history to have an undefeated regular season. The 1939 Raiders still hold an unbroken NCAA record for most punts during a single game. They punted for 39 times while playing in a driving rainstorm.
Current Quarterbacks in the Roster
Seth Doege, Graham Harrell, Stefan Loucks, Taylor Potts
Texas Tech Raiders Recent News
The Raiders are proving to be one up and coming bunch as they kick off November with a victory over the number 1 Texas Longhorns. This has been cemented by a pass from Quarterback Graham Harrell to All-American wide receiver Michael Crabtree with 8 seconds remaining. This has been billed up as the most important game in Texas tech history, and has also spawned the largest home crowd in school history. Expect to see more of their games build up this way as they are now the number two seed in all major polls, and in the BCS rankings.
